Avoiding a HIPAA Security Breach

Here is the story of one clinic and how Chart Talk saved them from losing all of their EHR data to a disgruntled provider.

It is troubling when parting ways with an employee. In one clinics case, a disgruntled provider decided to pack up all of their things one afternoon and leave; with their company provided computer!  The staff realized the security breach immediately and logged into Chart Talk to disable the users account.  With the help of the Chart Talk Hosted Services Team, we changed all passwords for all users as part of the clinics documented HIPAA procedures.

Unfortunately, the practice management/billing software was not in the Chart Talk Hosted Services Domain and the clinic needs to pursue further measures in an attempt to secure that data.

RANSOMWARE: Scourge of the Healthcare Industry

Ransomware is the latest scheme by nefarious individuals.  In this article, the author cites the vulnerability that has been exposed at healthcare clinics/hospitals to ransomware.

Ransomware infects your system typically by a careless individual clicking a bad link in an email. The link downloads a small program that encrypts your entire database. To get the encryption key you must pay the hackers price, wiring money to some foreign account.

This is another aspect where cloud services can protect you from inadvertently  losing all access to your records. A recent poll at HIMMS had ~50% of clinic management personnel unsure what they would do if they lost access to all of their data.
